HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE ADVANCES FROM DECLARATION TO ACTION!
Close to 1,000 people packed the Los Angeles Convention Center on International Human Rights Day, December 10, 2010, for the 2nd annual South Los Angeles Health and Human Rights Conference: From Declaration To Action. Following the conference, hundreds of participants boarded busses to demonstrate against the loss of health services at the former site of Orthopedic Hospital and its replacement by a luxury housing development. The conference held six workshops engaging the right to health; behavioral health; housing; education and employment; food sovereignty; and dignity and safety. Each workshop, building on the South LA Declaration of Health and Human Rights, developed a set of action steps to advance the South Los Angeles health and human rights agenda. In the weeks to follow, we will send a list of actions we will engage in together going forward to further this growing movement. Speakers at the conference included: Vice Minister of Health for the Republic of El Salvador, Dr. Violeta Menjivar; Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas; Dr. Bob Ross of the California Endowment; Howard Kahn of L.A. Care; Dave Regan, Executive Vice President of SEIU; and Deborah Burton of LA CAN. "The conference was an inspiration," stated Robert Duran, a community clinic patient who lived in South Los Angeles. "I am excited to take action in the months ahead to advance the movement for health and human rights!"
