America was founded on core principles of human rights - a promise that later shaped the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and still serves as a beacon to much of the world. To honor and advance that movement, it is important to account for how we fall short on that promise in communities like South Los Angeles. And to make the promise real, we must join with and learn how everyday heroes and leaders are using the language and tools of human rights to improve our health, our economy and our future.

The South Los Angeles Declaration of Health and Human Rights emerged from the First Annual Conference in June 2009 and was unveiled six months later on International Human Rights Day on the grounds of Martin Luther King Jr Hospital. A historic document, the South LA Declaration helped bring residents, local leaders and service providers from the worlds of health, food security, housing, public safety, behavioral health, education, and employment together on common ground with shared purpose. Using the language of the Declaration, that momentum has continued, spurring action within and outside of South Los Angeles as well as stronger alliances amongst community, labor, and international partners. On December 10, 2010 , International Human Rights Day, we marked the one year anniversary of the Declaration by convening nearly 1000 individuals at the LA Convention Center to learn how we each can fulfill the promise of this nation and of the resurgent movement for health and human rights. The Second Annual South Los Angeles Health and Human Rights Conference was a tremendous success. Nearly 9 out of 10 attendees reported significantly increased knowledge and commitment to health and human rights. And hundreds took concrete action that very day - from signing postcards to the Governor decrying draconian health care budget cuts and signing petitions against harmful business practices at a large local hospital chain to protesting in the streets against the loss of a community hospital at the hands of a corporate developer.  Details
